Everything you need to know about St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah

The countdown to St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah is on.
Here’s a look at what to expect and how to make the most of the parade and celebration.

Every year, Savannah hosts a large parade for St. Patrick’s Day.
Marching bands and dancers come from all over the Southeast to participate in this famous event!
Locals and visitors look forward to it – it’s one of Savannah’s most celebrated events!
With Irish heritage, music, fun, and lots of green-St Patrick’s day is packed with excitement!
Now that it’s celebrating again after the 2020 lockdown, here are some things to do in Savannah that will help you get into St. Patrick’s Day spirit:

Where to watch

The parade route snakes almost three miles through Savannah’s Historic District and begins promptly at 10:15 a.m.
The six squares along the parade route are popular viewing spots and the favorite of longtime attendees and families, many of whom set up picnics.
The squares open at 6 a.m., but most people will have claimed all frontage by 6:01 a.m

Bathroom facilities

Public bathrooms are located at points near the parade route. Facilities are also available at Forsyth Park, Ellis Square, and River Street Visitors Information Center.

Parking

The city-owned surface lots and parking garages are open on parade day, although some will be inaccessible after 8 am because of road closures near the parade route.
On-street legal parking spots are permitted unless otherwise posted.
Those illegally parked will be ticketed, and in certain instances, cars may even be towed depending on where they’re located along the inside of squares off the parade route (for example).
Chatham Area Transit operates shuttles from remote locations while Kelly Tours offers shuttle service to those attending from areas including Hutchinson Island.
The Savannah Convention Center garage is also available for people who need a place to park!
It’s connected via free ferries to River Street and other locations surrounding the procession route.

What to wear

Wear a lot of green, and many layers. The weather can change drastically from one day to the next in Savannah this time of year.
Comfortable shoes will be required as most attendees park at a distance.
Sunglasses and hats should also be worn since they’re trendy right now!
Beaded necklaces or other “flair” items are popular too (especially for those who want something fashionable).

What to bring

The parade usually lasts three hours or more. If you’re attending, be sure to bring a folding chair and water/snacks! Coolers are permitted as long as they aren’t made of Styrofoam because the litter created when they break causes issues.

Now it’s time for fun!

When you’ve got everything in order, it’s time to have some fun!
Pick up a couple of green beads and dance alongside the percussionists and bagpipes.
Your camera is ready for one of the silliest, most exciting days in your life-one that can be classified as very green.

We at Savannah Dream Vacations wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s day!
