The Chandler House: A Rare New Construction Vacation Rental in Savannah’s Historic District!

Not everybody likes old houses.

Sure, people like the style and charm of an old house, but 120+ year old properties, renovated, or not, just aren’t for everybody.

So when Savannah Dream Vacations gave me the opportunity to stay in the Chandler House, I was excited, but not sure what to expect.

New, but Not Without History

The Chandler House is large, clearly brand new, and looks like a historic Savannah home. We walked in the front door and were stunned by what we saw.

The smell of new construction welcomes you to your vacation home in Georgia’s oldest city. The house is open, and sunlight pours in through the many windows, making the whole space cheery.

We walked right past the hidden reclaimed pocket doors, on our way through the dining room into the den. We did notice a chalk board with a happy message from the last guests, boding well for our stay.

Surrounded by all the conveniences of a modern luxury home, it was easy to miss the artifacts of Savannah’s history placed around the room. The huge smart TV is directly across from the chef’s kitchen, with marble counter tops, an island, and high-end gas stove.

Out the back door is a large porch with a swing and a bistro table, perfect for enjoying the huge backyard. The breeze of a clear Savannah evening was demanding that we have a cocktail and get on “Savannah time”, but we wanted to see more of the house.

We continued exploration of the interior, up the grand staircase to the second floor. We discovered two bedrooms with new beds and, two modern bathrooms, one with a tub/shower, and one with a steam shower.

What we didn’t realize at first glance, was that this brand new house was filled with history.

The lot the house sits on has a provenance that is very well documented.

Situated in the center of the Lloyd Ward in the “Victorian Planned Neighborhood Conservation” District, the original house was built in 1884.

The home’s most prominent owner was George H. Meinert, who ran the Savannah Ship Chandlery and Supply Company whose offices were on River Street.

I had to look it up, but a “chandler” is defined as: a dealer in supplies and equipment for ships and boats.

With the new information on the history of the property, things became clearer! The “Chandler House” had new meaning to me. Looking around the house with new eyes, I noticed (and could not wait to point out to my party) the artifacts that are blended in with the décor have historical significance!

The porch lights mounted to the back porch aren’t just nifty re-creations!

Now every piece of art hanging on the wall is worthy of inspection.

It was fun to explore the house and ponder which objets d’art were historical artifacts.

The Chandler House Is a Block From Forsyth Park

The rest of my little group had had enough of “nerding-out” over the history surrounding the home, and we ate a meal prepared in the immaculate kitchen.

We decided to take an evening stroll around Forsyth Park, so we locked up, headed east, and made the very short walk under the streetlamps to Savannah’s famous Forsyth Park fountain.

Most visitors to Savannah have seen the fountain, but if you haven’t seen it lit up at night, you haven’t really seen it!

It was a quiet night in Savannah, so we didn’t see many other people in the park, but we did get asked by a nice couple from Vermont to snap their picture in front of the fountain. Hope it turned out great Diana and Mark!

Stay in the Chandler House

After morning coffee on the porch swing, it was, unfortunately, time to go. We enjoyed everything about the home, and would not hesitate to stay in the Chandler House again.

I want to shout out to Savannah Dream Vacations for doing such a great job making everything ready for our stay.

The temperature was comfortable, all the linens and toiletries were new and ready, and the house was totally clean.

We didn’t have any problems during our stay, but the staff let us know that they were available if we needed anything at all.

So if you’re looking for a private Savannah vacation rental near Forsyth Park and all that downtown Savannah has to offer, definitely consider the Chandler House. It’s new, and it’s historic. How cool is that?
